The Floresville Locavore
Formerly The Local Food Project

This area of the website is devoted to the promotion of locally grown food in Wilson County. Welcome and read on!

In recent years more awareness has come to the benefits of eating food produced in the area in which one lives. The benefits are many with just a few listed below:

Transparency – Having access to the actual grower of the food you consume, you have the opportunity to know exactly how your food was grown – what was put into it and what was not.
Seasonal Goodness – Foods grown nearby are those that are in season for our region.
Freshness – When foods are available locally and don’t have to be shipped from hundreds of miles away, greater freshness is almost guaranteed.
Less Fuel Consumption – Limiting the distance a product has to travel to get to the consumer lowers the amount of fuel required to ship that food to market.
Supporting Local Producers - Our local economy is improved whenever we buy from local growers and producers.
Fellowship – Meeting the growers of your food and others that are interested in getting their food from close to home produces the opportunity to get to know your community neighbors and share something great – good food!

Finding Local Food

There is a bounty of food being grown in Wilson County and The Floresville Locavore is an effort to find that food. Home gardeners who grow more than they can consume, poultry keepers with an abundance of fresh eggs, larger market growers willing to share their commodity – if you would like to share your bounty, you are examples of the type of people being sought for The Local Food List! Below are some of the products that could be of interest.

• Locally grown fruits, nuts and vegetables
• Organically grown produce and nuts
• Eggs from cage-free / free-range chickens
• Pastured and / or heirloom poultry
• Locally produced honey
• Grass fed / free range meat products
• Products produced from locally grown produce (eg. olive oil soaps from locally grown olives or jelly made from locally grown fruits)

Sustainable and Organic

The Local Food Project is about just that – finding LOCAL food for local consumers, be it conventionally grown or naturally/organically grown. However, a large part of this project is finding sustainably and organically grown food. This means that the produce was not treated with any chemical herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers. Additionally, animals are not treated with hormones or sub-theraputic levels of medication. Ideally they are raised "as nature intended" with room to grow and natural forage available. Research has shown that organically grown foods have more nutrients and in many cases just taste better. And, it is good to know that access can be gained to quality food that is grown with the health of both the consumer, the environment and all those in it in mind.

The Floresville Locavore List

This list has been created for the sole purpose of getting like-minded people in contact. I have been interested in finding area growers from whom I could buy produce, eggs and honey for years and this project is me following through on that interest. My hope is that through this list other residents of Wilson County can find the good, locally grown, often "naturally" produced food they have been looking for but haven't been able to find.
